Why Every Young Athlete Should Attend RBC Training Ground

Updated: Feb 23

DO IT, DO IT!

If you’re between 14 and 25 and have a passion for sport, RBC Training Ground is an opportunity you don’t want to miss.

I know it can feel intimidating to try something new, to put yourself out there, or to not know exactly what to expect—trust me, I’ve been there. But this program has the potential to change your life.

I attended RBC Training Ground in 2017, with no idea what to expect.

✔️ I didn’t know what sport I wanted to pursue.

✔️ I didn’t know which testing event I’d perform best in.

✔️ I didn’t even know if anything would come from it.

All I knew was that I wanted to be an athlete again.

Not only did I get to be an athlete again—I got to become an Olympian.

In less than four years after attending RBC Training Ground, I went from being an unknown athlete to Olympic Champion.

And it all started with one event.

What to Expect at an RBC Training Ground Qualifying Event

If you’re thinking about signing up, here’s what you need to know:

Who Can Attend?

🏆 Athletes ages 14-25 from all backgrounds.

🏆 Some have played sports their whole lives.

🏆 Some are trying an organized sport for the first time.

🏆 Some have been counting down the days for this event.

🏆 Some signed up the night before (shoutout to the supportive parents!).

Regardless of experience, everyone is welcome—and everyone has a shot.

The Energy in the Room

From first-time attendees to returning athletes, there’s a buzz in the air—a mix of nerves, excitement, and anticipation.

💪 Excitement for the unknown.

💪 Excitement for the possibilities.

💪 Excitement for the opportunity to prove what you're capable of.

This is your chance to show Team Canada coaches and scouts what you’ve got—but more importantly, to show yourself what you’re capable of.

How the Testing Works

The event starts with a warm-up, and then you’ll move through a series of tests in small groups.

📌 The usual order of events:

✔️ Strength

✔️ Speed

✔️ Power

✔️ Endurance

(And no, you don’t have to be amazing at all of them!)

Every sport values different strengths, so don’t stress if you’re not the fastest runner or have the highest vertical jump.

(And yes, I know not everyone loves the beep test!)

My Advice for Athletes Attending RBC Training Ground

✔️ It’s okay to be nervous. It means you care!

✔️ If you’re going solo, talk to other athletes. You’re all in this together.

✔️ Enjoy the experience. It’s not every day you get to test yourself alongside some of the best young athletes in Canada.

✔️ Give it everything you’ve got. You never know where it might lead.

Why You Should Take This Opportunity

Attending RBC Training Ground was one of the best decisions of my life.

🚴‍♀️ I had never ridden a track bike before.

🥇 Less than four years later, I became an Olympic Champion.
